Rainbows: And on the eighth day, the fashion gods created jeggings

This piece was a joint effort between Bianca Segura, Ginger Grossman, and Rachel Simpson.

            Leggings + Jeans = Jeggings.
While jeans can be dressed up, down, hip, country, overalls, and more, they are not always comfortable. They also have a way of making people feel bad when the button can no longer be stretched over a full stomach.
Leggings are an abundance of stretchy comfort. In an array of colors, an individual can feel completely forgiven and at ease in leggings.
But the fact remains that leggings are simply not pants.
Recently, an ingenious individual has merged elements of both: part stretch, part class, and wholly acceptable pants. Thus, jeggings were created.

Jeggings are like a second cousin to “skinny jeans.” Skinny jeans got closer to the body and tighter than jeans had ever been before. They gave women (and later, men) the excuse to show off their nether regions. They broke the rule that pants had to be baggy in any way, shape, or form.
Starting oversees, the jeggings craze hit the U.S. in fall of 2009 and has only escalated since then. Now that the trend has officially taken off, jeggings can be found in any major clothing store from Bloomingdale's to Wal-Mart. Trend analysts are calling them the new face of jeans and anticipating jeggings to stay strong through Spring 2011.
To put into perspective just how popular the jean-leggings trend has become, jeggings has been a trending topic on Yahoo! several times, meaning they were briefly among the top ten searches for the day.
The word ‘jeggings’ is actually being wait listed and may be entered into the Oxford English Dictionary. Also being considered are ‘staycation’ and ‘unfriend’.
Jeggings fit in nicely with a backlash to “leggings as pants.” There is a Facebook group devoted to stating how leggings can be worn, and how most of the time they are not appropriate.

There are also alternatives to the jeggings look. For a more upscale, professional look with all the comfort of leggings, treggings are the upcoming trend. Treggings are a hybrid of trousers and leggings which allows more work friendly clothing to be worn in a comfortable manner.
For a n every day look, jeggings can be paired with an oversized t-shirt and ballet flats. For cooler weather, add a cardigan. Jeggins stand alone as a fashion piece, and ca really be paired with anything.
To dress up them up slightly, try sporting a button-down blouse with a belt and ankle boots. If Beyonce has taught us anything, its how to glamorize jeggings. When she introduced jeggings on the red carpet she paired them with a sequined mini dress, black blazer and patent heels for a bold evening look.
Where are jeggings headed now? Meet the fashion world's newest neologism, meggings. That's right, jeggings for men. Meggings. After years of trendy boys slipping on women’s tight jeans, someone has finally created jeggings specifically for the male population.

However, if you think making the transition from real denim to jeggings will save you money, think again. The prices of jeggings are not any less expensive. Jeggings run from as low as $20 (the Miley Cyrus brand at Wal-mart) to The Twiggy jegging from James Jeans which is a favorite of stars like Charlize Theron, Halle Berry and Joy Bryant and cost up to $158.
Perhaps much of the success of jeggings can be attributed to their versatility. Depending on the event jeggings can be paired with many tops and accessories to be dressed up or down.

Advantages of Jeggings:
• Perfect for women who want to wear short dresses but want to hide their legs.
• Perfect for keeping warm during the fall season, but breezy enough for those warm winter days.
• Elastic waistband makes them more comfortable than jeans.

Disadvantages of Jeggings:
• They have the power to show every imperfection.
• The lesser the quality, the more obvious that jeggings are not real denim.

Considering the advantages and disadvantages of jeggings, one can only wonder what kind of staying power jeggings have. Will we be rocking these pants season after season like skinny jeans, or in a couple years will we look back and laugh like we do now at the idea of "skants"? (please tell me you remember the hot minute everyone wanted the skirt-pant combo?) I suppose only time will determine the future of jeggings.
